The Tenant

If there is more than one tenant then all adult tenants should sign the tenancy agreement.

The terms of the tenancy agreement should also make it clear that they are jointly and severally liable - that is, each of the tenants is legally liable for ensuring all the rent is paid. It is common practice for the tenants to agree that they are each responsible for a share of the rent. However this is purely an agreement between the tenants. If the tenants are jointly and severally liable then the landlord can request the unpaid rent from any of the tenants even if they have already paid their "share".
