The Rent

The tenancy agreement should specify the amount of the rent, the frequency of the payments and when the payments should be made such as £500 per month payable monthly in advance on the 5th day of each month.

The frequency of the rent has an impact on the notice periods required to end the tenancy as notice is measured in rent periods.

For tenants paid weekly there are advantages in collecting the rent each week to avoid the need for them to budget over a month. If the rent is payable weekly then the tenant must be provided with a rent book.

For tenants receiving various benefits then it may be helpful to tie in the rent payments to dates that the benefit is received.

It is most common for rent to be payable monthly. Even if rent is actually collected weekly or four-weekly there are many advantages in specifying monthly rent on the tenancy agreement and making the more regular rent payments simply an informal agreement between landlord and tenant.
